Easington District Carers Support Centre unveiled by millionaire
The Easington District Carers Support centre in Peterlee, County Durham was today unveiled by a man who appeared on the TV show The Secret Millionaire, after they were forced to relocate due to budget cuts and the inability to afford their premises.
There were no uniforms or undercover street wardens at the launch today; instead it was the man himself. Carl Hopkins, who appeared on the Channel 4 series in 2008, unveiled the new centre to a mass crowd of carers, supporters and volunteers.
During his undercover mission, which lasted ten days in the Easington and Peterlee area, the millionaire met with some amazing people at the Easington District Carers Support centre. Unfortunately, the centre did not make the final cut of the programme however it was them that left the biggest impression on Mr Hopkins.
Since then Mr Hopkins has remained in close contact with the centre for more than two years. In that time he has supported the hard-working team and helped them to raise awareness of community based groups in the region.
Alongside Mr Hopkins at the unveiling was another familiar face. Ex Sunderland football player John Kay cut the ribbon to unveil the all new premises for Easington District Carers Support.
Acting manager Jan Burden said: "We couldn't afford the rent in the previous building, but good things have come from it because the building we are in now is more visible for people.
"We made that connection with Carl two years ago and he's never severed that link with us.
"It's brilliant to have an old friend back and someone that has helped us so much over the last two years."
To celebrate the launch there featured a range of stalls selling old-fashioned sweets, cupcakes, plants and crafts. There was also a bouncy castle for the youngsters and an outstanding acapella performance of Adele’s number one hit “Someone like you” from Alex Brown, a talented student of Shotton Hall Theatre School, Peterlee.
